Welcome to the P.B.S. Studios About Page! On this page, I provide a little history about P.B.S. Studios, an overview of the different services my photography/writing/digital painting company offers, and how you can contact P.B.S. Studios through the About Page.
In the Beginning – Photography!
P.B.S. Studios began in 1969 as a freelance photography company, supplying sports photographs from high school sporting events to local newspapers. During the ’70s, P.B.S. Studios moved to provide pictures to stock photography, delivering images for advertising, regional and national magazines, book publishers, and other clients. Added Writing Division
In 1976, P.B.S. Studios moved from just photography to a combination writer-photography business with the publication of a photo-illustrated article in A.L.A. Away Magazine on Bradly Air Museum. Since then, Peter Smolens, the president and driving force behind P.B.S. Studios, has published photo-illustrated articles in newspapers, magazines, and online publications. Expanding to Digital Painting
In recent years, P.B.S. Studios has expanded into one of the newest art forms: Digital Painting. Paintings are created on a computer. Some images use reference photographs as the base layer, and other digital paintings are done freehand. The artist, Peter Smolens, creates images emulating oil, pastel, watercolor, and other traditional paint styles.

Content and Copywriting
P.B.S. Studios retired from full-time work after twenty years as a programmer and another twenty years as a technical writer for different government agencies. In retirement, P.B.S. Studios is trying to live the “Barefoot” life as a copy and web content writer. P.B.S. Studios has taken classes through American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI); which publishes a monthly magazine called “Barefoot Writer.” Peter Smolens of P.B.S. Studios won the magazine’s monthly writing contest (Feb 2021). In May 2022, the magazine published an interview on P.B.S. Studios writing journey. In June 2022, the magazine published a feature article on my writing process. P.B.S. Studios is available for freelance copy/content/feature writing assignments.
